Motion

Graham Motion is a Kentucky Derby-winning Thoroughbred trainer whose career spans more than three decades at the highest levels of American and international racing. Based at Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, his Herringswell Stables combines an international foundation in horsemanship with a proven record of developing elite competitors.

Raised in England in a family deeply connected to Thoroughbred racing, Motion learned his craft under Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard, gained further experience with Jonathan Pease in France, and served as an assistant to Maryland trainer Bernie Bond before establishing his own stable in 1993. Those formative years helped shape a career rooted in attentive horsemanship and an understanding of the individual athlete.

His résumé includes Animal Kingdom’s victories in the 2011 Kentucky Derby and 2013 Dubai World Cup, alongside Breeders’ Cup triumphs with Better Talk Now, Shared Account, Main Sequence, and Sharing. Additional standouts include Miss Temple City, who defeated males in two Grade I races at Keeneland, underscoring the depth of a program successful across surfaces and on racing’s biggest stages.

At Fair Hill, Motion’s approach combines close observation, individualized preparation, and a training environment that allows horses time outdoors alongside their daily work. His commitment to Thoroughbreds extends beyond competition: together with his wife, Anita, he has long supported aftercare and opportunities for retired racehorses to pursue second careers.

For Dutch Girl Holdings, LLC, Motion’s partnership adds an experienced East Coast presence to the racing program. Overseeing Feroza, Makina, and Atomic Belle, he brings decades of insight to the task of developing their potential and preparing them for competition. His international perspective, accomplished résumé, and attention to each horse make him a valued member of the Dutch Girl Holdings team.
